​JULIA SZEMIEL BRONZE MEDALIST OF 24th Summer Deaflympics


Sensational results have been achieved by the deaf athletes - the students of Jan Dlugosz University in Czestochowa. On May 1-15, the 24th Summer Deaflympics were held in Caxias do Sul, which 2401 athletes from 73 countries participated in. In table tennis, 74 ping-pong players from 22 countries competed for medals. A historic success was achieved by Julia Szemiel who won the bronze medal as a team (the first place for Ukraine, the second - Japan). For entry into the final, the Polish team lost to Japan 2:3. Individually, J. Szemiel and G. Dyszkiewicz were classified in 5th place. This has been the first Olympic medal since 1969, i.e. the beginning of the competition of table tennis players with the participation of Polish athletes, and the greatest success of a student in the history of academic sport of the University. 

Adrian Szeliga was also a sporting success. In the team competition he won sixth place. No advance to the medal zone was determined by the defeat against Kazakhstan 2:3. In the individual tournament, only A. Szeliga advanced from the group.

The Polish team won a total of 42 medals, including 8 gold ones. Poland was represented by male and female volleyball players, male and female basketball players, male and female football players, athletes, swimmers, cyclists, judokas and ping-pong players.
